Did you know that making sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer specified amount can help you save money in multiple ways? By inflating your tires to the proper PSI you ensure that you are getting the proper tread-to-road contact which limits the amount of friction on your tires. This promotes proper wear-and-tear on your tires and extends the life of your tire (saving you cash by needing to replace the tires less). You will also increase your gas mileage by reducing this friction because your car will roll smoother and reduce the amount of work your engine needs to do. 

You can generally find your car’s recommended tire pressure by looking just inside the door drivers side door (near the door’s latch), glove box, or fuel door. It may also be listed in your car’s manual. The tire itself will list a minimum and maximum pressure to stay between, but since different cars have varying weights even when they use the same tire, the tire pressures will change.

You may want to check your tire pressure once a week or once every two weeks to ensure they are at the proper PSI. If you find that you are losing substantial pressure from your tires you may want to have them checked for leaks and have them repaired if necessary. It is also important to remember that keeping your tires at the proper pressure will reduce the occurrence of blowouts or tire failure. It will also allow your car to handle, accelerate, and brake properly!

Two simple maintenance tips to reduce this waste are to make sure your gas cap has a tight seal (and the proper cap for your vehicle) and that your fuel system has no leaks/holes.

An old gasoline filler neck will tend to rust and fall apart. Although you may not notice a leak, the gasoline turns into a vapor and finds its way out of your car and into the air! So a simple fix such as replacing these parts can save you extra Cash every year and help your fuel economy! (it might even get your “check engine” light to turn off in time for your yearly inspection.)
